The struggle of courageous Bodhisattvas of the Earth will bring successive victories that will last forever ~ Ikeda
You can fall from a mountain, you can fall from a tree.
But they best way you can fall, is a friendship with me
Have the sweetest week my friends!

To My Lovely Friends- wishing you all a new Beginning, Happy Easter and a Sweet WeekendThe naked earth is warm with Spring,
And with green grass and bursting trees
Leans to the suns kiss glorying,
And quivers in the sunny breeze.
Those who believe in the Lotus Sutra are as if in winter, but winter
always turns to spring.

I was asked to create a short speech that explains the significance of March 16th. And I really tried to make this as non-preachy as possible. Going to school for 5 years for sciences; I tend to get in the mode of transmission of information with supporting material. On one hand this is a date that marks the 50 years that have passed since the second President of Soka Gakkai, Josie Toda, passed the torch to the 6000 youth that assembled to take on the struggle for Kosen Rufu; the desire of Nichiren Diashonin.
This date is significant because Josie Toda proclaimed to the youth that they would form the bedrock of propagation of this philosophy that would reach the entire world. Kosen Rufu, or world peace means that people awake to their mission to take care of the environment around them, the people around them, to take a stand against violence and to take responsibility for their lives.
Among many youth that assembled that day a young disciple, Diasaku Ikeda, took a silent vow that day that he would see to it that Kosen Rufu would become a reality and, right here in Milwaukee, Wisconsin-USA we practice this now!
The youth of post war Japan felt a deep obligation to commit to creating tangible peace after witnessing the atrocities of WWII. Entire cities where leveled and hundreds of thousands of people where dying of radiation from the atomic bombs that where dropped and the general feeling was hopelessness and despair. Here in Milwaukee, while far cry from the devastation of post war Japan, we are witnessing violence none the less. We live in a time where we are constantly engaged in a war on terror, a war on drugs, a war on poverty. People feel hopeless to change. As an SGI youth I feel compelled to do something that creates value. I feel the need to empower people lives with this philosophy.
The Buddhism of Nichiren is different from any other philosophy in that it is not about what will happen in the next life, or in some other realm, but what you can do here in the now! In the beginning of my practice when i was in my teens that was one thing that I learned that really stuck with me; “That if you vow to change something, the only thing that will stop you is your own inner devils”
When a person awakens to this responsibility it could be called enlightenment. When a person takes action on this they are called a Buddha or a bodhisattva. Almost like when people say you are and angel sent from the heavens, a bodhisattva has emerged from the earth. This is human revolution. You embrace your struggles yet reach out to someone struggling then you are taking 100 percent responsibility for what happens in your life, you can recognize that every single living being are equal, all embody the same potential greatness that anyone else has, you are a Buddha. When we can truly learn and embody this spirit of unconditional love (or Buddhahood) we are practicing Buddhism correctly. We are creating Kosen Rufu.
President Ikeda says: “We perceive the treasure tower in our lives and we perceive the treasure tower in the lives of others. We work to sanctify the places we live and the entire world with forests of treasure towers!” In the Wisdom of the Lotus Sutra vol.3 Kosen Rufu Day is “a movement to empower people by showing them that, through their efforts they can definitely change the world (p.34).”
March 16th , today, is the day when the young people sanctify the places they live and work by recognizing the treasure tower in all living beings. Simply put, when we follow the guidance of our mentor we can when we empower ourselves so that we can go out and empower others!
After today lets together in the spirit of many in body and one in mind create Kosen Rufu in our own lives first, and at work, and in our neighborhoods, our state, and so on! There is not one person in the world that would not benefit from this philosophy, or fromm knowing that they are beautiful, capable people. This is exactly what the three founding presidents (Makiguchi, Toda & Ikeda) have been propagating, that we as we are right now are, as we are, beautiful, capable people.
As young people and enlightened people we possess the energy and a fresh edge that will allow us to contribute to this world to create value where others see it valueless! Let’s make it our unique missions to become completely happy so that we have life forces about us that tears down walls of arrogance, greed, and the ugly sides of human nature. Lets take a vow today to so that we can help create a world where every single living being knows there inherent worth!
This is the significance of March 16, 2008, YOU ARE SIGNIFICANT! this is the spirit of Buddhism!
