04/28/08 Which Plastic Food Containers to Avoid
Plastics surely have made our lives more convenient. But our plastic waste is choking the planet and recent studies have found that some plastics can leech harmful chemicals into foods and liquids.
Choose glass containers instead whenever they are available. When you buy food or liquids in plastic containers, be aware of which plastics are potentially better or worse for your health.
Avoid vinyl, styrofoam, and polycarbonate plastic in food containers. Look on the bottom of the container for the recycling triangle; if it is number 3, 6 or 7, do not purchase it.
Choose plastics labeled 1, 2, 4 or 5 in the recycling triangle. Do not heat beverages or food in plastic containers of any kind. It only takes a moment to pop that dinner out of its container into a pyrex dish before cooking it.
