Hang in there. We are all challenging our negativities, so don't feel alone. I'd like to share some insights from President Ikeda on challenging our attitude, as follows.

*****
The course of our lives is determined by how we react--what we decide and what we do--at the darkest of times. The nature of that response determines a person's true worth and greatness.
*****
The purpose of life is to be happy. We should not be pessimistic. Let us live always with optimism--joyful, strong and bright. That is why we practice the Daishonin's Buddhism.
*****
One thing is certain: The power of belief, the power of thought, will move reality in the direction of our belief. If you really believe you can do something, YOU CAN. That is a fact.
*****
Everything depends on what is in our hearts. Heartfelt prayers will definitely be answered. If we decide that something is impossible, then, consistent with our minds thinking so, even possible things will become impossible. On the other hand, if we have the confidence that we can definitely do something, we are one step closer to achieving it. (LG p. 129)

There is a Russian proverb that says: "It is no use to blame the looking glass if your face is awry." Likewise, one's happiness or unhappiness is entirely the reflection of the balance of both good and bad causes accumulated in one's life. No one can blame others for his misfortunes. In the world of faith it is necessary to realize this clearly. *****
Daimoku is like light. As the Daishonin says, "A candle can light up a place that has been dark for billions of years." Similiarly, the moment we offer prayers based on daimoku, the darkness in our lives vanishes. This is the principle of the simultaneity of cause and effect. At that very instant in the depthss of our lives our prayer has been answered.
*****

The inherent cause (nyo ze in) of a deep prayer simultaneously produces a latent effect (nyo ze ka). While it takes time for this effect to become manifest, our prayers are immediately realized in the depths of our lives. So at that moment light shines forth. The lotus flower (renge) in blooming and seeding at the same time illustrates this principle of simultaneity of cause and effect. *****
In any case, Nora, the important thing is to continue striving and don't give up. If we falter, we can just make a fresh determination and try again.
*****
"Life is a struggle with ourselves. It is a tug-of-war between progress and regression, between happiness and unhappiness. Those short on willpower or self-motivation should chant daimoku with conviction to become people of strong will who can tackle any problem with seriousness and determination."

Hi Nora,

Hope this helps a bit but a leader once gave guidance to a friend of mine going through tough circumstances within his own negativity. He said: "No matter how good or how BAD you feel, just accomplish your mission." Everything will fall into place if you accomplish your mission. best, -Dan

Hi, thanks for your interest. I'm not doing as well as I wish. However I have reduced the amount of cigarrettes per day considerably, and I don't smoke at work, I spend ten hours and a half at work. But I'm sure I'll achieve it by the end of the winter (I live in Argentina)to turn my life into a continuous spring. Thanks again. I'll join you and encourage you to quit.
