SGI Buddhism

A community for SGI Members

First of all, let me explain that the ONLY reason that I am asking this is because where I live, the Dalai Lama is doing a few nights at a local large venue and some local members seem convinced that Daisaku Ikeda has had dialogue with the Dalai Lama .... Now, I've googled and came up with nothing .... just wondered if anyone had any information on that ?

I would certainly be interested to hear about any discussion they might have had, but I haven't yet heard of such a thing.
I've been practicing 25 years and never heard of it.
I was born as SGI member and i never heard or read something about it. But I'd like to look forward on their meeting they might have.
Didn't the Dali Lama give a comment or something on Sensei's book, "The World is Yours to Change?"

My impression of whether Sensei has had a discussion with the Dali Lama is that it may not be public information. I am not sure that SGI's policy is to engage in political strife in the world, even though SGI does make itself visible in some things in the world.

Here's just a small suggestion: why don't you write Sensei a letter and ask him? I am sure your letter will be taken in good spirit. I hear that he chants over every letter. Maybe it's best to ask him rather than take it to task here. I think his contact info is at http://daisakuikeda.org . The contact info is here: http://daisakuikeda.org/index.php?mid=faq&dimchar=normal

Hope you try it....let us know what happens...
Kindest regards,
Linda
cheers all .. pretty much what I expected .. I;ve not heard anything either. I won't bother asking Linda, it's not a matter of urgency .
I have never heard of a dialogue between President Ikeda and the Dalai Lama. I think this would be much more sensitive an issue in Japan...not so much politically, but from a religious aspect.
I attended a conference in October, held at Emory University, (Atlanta Georgia) hosted by the Dalai Lama on "Meditation, Compassion, and Treatment of Depression". The presenters were all eminent scientists who have carried out depression research including research on meditational practices and depression. It was wonderful. I was impressed with the Dalai Lama's demeanor: inquisitive, joyful, gracious. He showed great affection for all the presenters. As Nichiren said " The purpose of Shakyamuni's appearance in this world is revealed in his behavior as a human being." And, as the Dalai Lama has said, "Kindness is my religion."

I wish I had known you wanted an answer to this question when I met him on Tuesday Charlie. At least then i would've known what to say to him, instead of muttering the words... "Thank you" lol
Hi, if you tried asking Sensei please let us know of it response. We are all interested.
Hmmm, Sensei and the Dalai Lama may have held privately meeting... (It would be a disgrace if they had not at least met at one point in time in the past)...But seriously, BOTH of them should be credited to the revived interest (at least in the Western Hemisphere)today to Buddhism as a whole.

Sensei would be the better choice to be an Ambassador of Buddhism; People can relate to his being a layman (he is married) and the various troubles he has gone through in developing, inspiring and fostering the members of the SGI all over the world.

"The Foundations for Worldwide Kosen-Rufu is Complete" - Sensei Ikeda in a January 2008 speech
Greetings,

On this subject, seeing with an open mind and open eyes, with a cause for human rights, justice, and peace, I stumbled upon this connection:

Essentially, this "tibetculture" website is a propaganda site for the Chinese government. Now, SG-Malaysia has co-sponsored an art exhibition in the midst of this human rights crisis involving Tibetans.

This is the propaganda part of the site that might be missed without a closer look:

We don't agree with this, do we? I certainly do not think that President Ikeda would agree with this following statement:

We don't agree with this line, do we?

"The Dalai Lama, now in exile, was the religious and political ruler of old Tibet, and therefore responsible for the sufferings of the people."

from this site:

whilst I don't agree with Chinese occupation per se .. it does seem that pre China tibet was a very outdated place with most people being subservient to priests .. Whilst I've no doubt that the Dalai Lama is a nice enough bloke .. The general tibetan buddhist 'regime' seems more akin to the Nikken sect than SGI. I don't honestly understand why everyone is so obsessed with the Dalai Lama .. like I say probably a nice enough guy but about as much in common with Nichiren Buddhism as the pope !
I would just like to illustrate the point that within Nichiren's time, it was the highest teaching (lotus sutra), and the votary of the teaching, who was oppressed and, without fail, faced obstacles and the winds of oppression. These winds blew the votary onto the edges of society. I, too, feel that another such votary (transcending sects and national origin) as the Dalai Lama has come under persecution for making great strides in making what was esoteric into a tangibly exoteric (possible) teaching for humanity to find happiness, as this particular buddha-nature fits his practice.
