SGIbuddism.org Needs Your Opinion

I've had a couple of messages and simply thought I'd share here and see what "we" want to do :)

I'm just a guy that started this place because I travel a lot. Recently, SGI started wanting to interview people before they show up. That's is ok but it brought me to a screeching halt.
Frequently I can't reach the person for a few weeks and am already packing for the next place when I do.

So I started this place. I love it. For me its like making it to a meeting when I stop by. I've made friends and helped introduce many people to SGI because of my ability to find people here located just about anywhere.

So that's my intentions.

Now I have two issues that I need yor advice on. We have a really great group of people here and I think a dialogue would be helpful to me so thanks for particpating.

I've had people say I shoudl delete some pictures as they do not reflect our values as SGI members.

I've also been faced with a few decisions on whether to ban people. hasnt happened yet but I'm sure it will.

So I want YOUR opinion

1) Shoudl we Moderate Pictures?

I'm active on myspace etc. and I know if you tell people what they can and can't do they go away. I'm torn. We could allow people to be themselves and let them post what they want. We can post what we think and then poeple can dialogue OR we could delete pictures.

If we delete the pictures who decides? What are the standards?

On myspace and my other sites you can email pictures right form your phone to your profile. Poeple can do that here. So uploading pictures from your phone toyour profile is pretty common. It's a question of whether your personal profile is you or do you need to change it to meet our standards? I don't know the answer I'm asking you, LOL

2) Banning People

I think some decisions will be easy. What woudl we consider grounds for banning someone?

Your input is REALLY important so please post a reply.

Thanks
Chris

Hi Chris, your intentions are honorable. I can't thank you enough for this site.

I've not noticed any “standards” as far as what type of pictures can or can't be loaded into a person's photo album. Since you are paying the freight on this site I consider myself a “guest member.” I would comply with whatever the standards were/are.

We all live within the ten worlds. What is lewd, what is porno, what is art is something that the Admins of this group need to address. I for one would abide by their decision.

In a group that I manage a person had a album with about 20 photo's in it. One of them was a closeup of nude men in a running race. Dong's were flapping in the wind to say the least. I saw no value to the photo and deleted just that one from the album. Nothing was ever said by the member. People will always test you.

Banning.... If a person is a SGI member they should be allowed to dialogue on any subject or matter that is of concern to them. Other people should be allowed to respond in agreement or disagreement. They should not be allowed to degrade or belittle a person though i.e., no personal attacks. Stick to the subject at hand –-- lay off the person.

The reason most SGI members are here is in the hopes of further developing their faith through exchange and dialogue with others. As the group becomes more well know other flavor's of religion, purveyors of wear, and vindictive people will arrive.....

If they want to learn about the SGI and Nichiren Buddhism, thats great. But if they want to argue and espouse the virtues of their own flavor it seems a waist of time. Reason being, I have a web browser and am able to learn from them somewhere else, anytime I want. This group is about Nam-myoho-renge-kyo....

Maybe this will explain it better....

Episode I, The Jazz Club

A long time ago and in a galaxy far, far away....

....there were a small group of Jazz musicians that wanted to discuss the merits and joy of their endeavor. It was a hindrance to do so only because of the great size of the universe and the distance between each individual star. Sometime later a great invention occurred that allowed them to exchange dialogue through cyberspace. Distance and time became non-factors. They united and called themselves The Jazz Club.

The discussions were fantastic. It was like a symphony. The compassion and love of their endeavor poured forth. The Jazz musicians couldn't have been happier as their numbers grew and their individual growth expanded proportionately with each new persons arrival. Everyone had something of value to contribute and say about Jazz.

Because the membership of The Jazz Club had grown so quickly, others knew that it must be a happening place and something good must be going on. They wanted to join in.

The Jazz Club welcomed them with open arms, thinking that everyone could now learn about and enjoy the merits of Jazz.

At first it was only other musicians who arrived. A few Country and Western, some R&B, lots of Heavy Metal, Hip-Hop and even Popular and Oldies. The new comers didn't seem too interested in Jazz though, but they were eager to expound their own styles of music to the ever increasing mass of people who gathered.

The C&W folks said they told true to life stories, the R&B'ers said it was about the rhythm and real life, the Heavy Metal dudes talked so much you couldn't hear yourself think, the Hip-Hops said it was all in the dance. On and on and on it went. I'm right! You're wrong! No way! Blah, Blah, Blah.... Soon thereafter purveyor's-of-ware figured out how easy it was to post vile messages and come-on's with no impunity.

Eventually the music and harmony The Jazz Club had created was gone. The Jazz musicians quit coming to the Club. It was riff with filth and beyond their means to clean up.

New people to cyberspace were excited to see a hangout called The Jazz Club. Once arriving there, they were aghast and mystified by what they saw. They could only conclude that Jazz musicians were totally out of tune. They left, vowing never to return or listen to a Jazz musician again....

to be continued....

Episode II, Music to Your Ears, will be arriving soon to your favorite screen in cyberspace....

Chris, you have created a great meeting place for all of us here. More people will be arriving soon. With your good judgement, standards, and the help of your Admins, it will not turn into a free-for-all. Thanks again....

Its indeed a mind boggling question. :-)
Hmm.. What I suggest is : 1.Hey! we cant ban people.
2.What we can do is display a message : like eg.
a. Our server doesn't allow mature content to be displayed. We are sorry, if it
gets deleted. :-(
b. Please upload pictures which might not offend people from other cultures and
countries. SgI is an International organisation. Lets encourage even a single
person, who visits our site through our photos as well. :-)
3. The question is not about pictures. People dont have time to view all pics
enlarged. Its just that the slide show on the main page must strictly reflect SGI
views. Afterall, we cant offend those who haven't yet joined & who visit our
pages.

oh well that is easy on the pictures.

Right now its just whatever is loaded last
We ca change itto make a selection of featured pictures :)

And I had some other comments too so its not just about the great conversations we exchanged :)

One thing which I agree with Bob as well, is about the episode of deleting one offending picture from the entire album of 20. Its the same here. I hope, you get it now. Its nothing very big issue. :-)
I had to bring this issue as there had been few fully nude pics (i haven't checked them now), which were really disturbing.
Buddhism is common sense. I personally have faced few people in my life..I don't know why they have formed real bad views about our organisation, which needs to be corrected through prayers first and actions as well.
Also, nobody has enough time to view all pics..its just the slideshow on main page, which is my main concern.

I think we'll soon find the best solution. :-) Keep enjoying your joyride. Criticism doesn't always mean criticism, it might be an approach too. Ok'LOL!!

WOW let me know where thoise are and I will take care of them.

Please know that I was writing all that to gain clarity myself. I have had at least three people ask about pictures etc.

All this dialogue has been extremeley helpful!

Charu maybe you want to be an admin? Then you could help click the pitures that shoudl be featured :)

Hi Chris,
Really nice to see the world and the people through the eyes of those chanting NMHRK.
Simply awesome!!

It is really nice on your part and all others as well, for taking such great pains to find a middle way out. On your request, I fipped through all the photos uploaded. I found only one bit inappropriate.
Do mail me your personal email, so that I can let you know, which pic' i felt inappropriate. You can mail me at aruncharu@gmail.com.

Please rest assured with NMHRK, it's all momentous decision of revealing our Buddhahood and an opportunity to do Human Revolution. Since, the member is really strong, one rejoices to have someone, who cares to tread the true way and someone who cares to correct oneself for the sake of others.

Hey! All the best this time! Lets do our HR too in the process thru ''ichinen' sanzen of 10 worlds"
:-) Lol!

Being new to Buddhism, I joined this site cos it looked a good place to learn more, meet new members and open dialogue and healthy debate. I think you've created something unique and I congratulate you and reiterate totally what Bob Mann has said....
