[A note on this first youtube clip-it is an episode of this show that came on back in '97 called Austin Stories-it aired on MTV-anywho six minutes in they introduce the "goths" & one of them is Crow-Lou's first Fling!!! So enjoy.]
In the days after the Stillborn Lake awakened-the Spooky Kid Coven spent most of their time diner hopping-as if trying to take shelter in a storm-the following are three sketches of three diners & three ways these kids tried to escape whatever was lurking about. If Mahakala had been around she would have told the kids in that way of her's for she had to eyes to see-that hiding in the clouds-those sickly stain like clouds-the shadow things-who had been trailing them-had been intercepted by the angels of razor & broken glass-they were warring overhead. Mahakala knew this-for she had already been to the Otherside of the Nexus-she had seen things & she had returned...but the kids would find out about that soon enough.

The kids took shelter at Denny's-where else? It was usually the first stop on the long night of coffee & conversation-of hiding nervously from something they couldn't even name. The diner offered comfort in it's bland green seating cushions & green carpeting & cream colored everything else-in the plexiglass & the glare of florescent lamps outside-the shining head lights-the parade of off duty G.I.s-& strippers-the huddled masses making it at the La Quinta Inn-behind the diner. Yes this is what they needed.
The kids were feeling drained & loopy tonight. They needed the stability of this intersection between the lame norm & that slightly off centered unspeakable quality that only diners can have late at night-that trashy illumination of too much caffeine & second hand smoke-that most coffee houses just don't have-diners are like trash cans-the same everywhere-coffee houses are pretentious confections drawn up by yuppies with dreams of the 1950's & bongo drums & besides Killeen didn't boast any coffee houses & so had to make do with the dreck of plastic suburbia as it sank into it's decay.
They sat in the smoking section as always.
Nod: "Why won't this thing work?"
He is shaking his block like copy of ILLUMINATUS & holding it to his ear-as if it were a direct line to the Goddess of Chaos-Eris herself...he had just got the book back from Lou. He fiddles with it-like it was a gadget-one of those fancy laptops-or a new fangled cell phone---man who in hell would want to be connected to a phone line 24/7??? The thought terrified Nod.
Donna Jean: "Huh?"
She is rubbing her nose-her hair wild as if she just woke up-she look like she hadn't been sleeping well.
A haggard/nice waitress appears from behind a fake tree-very show woman like---ta da!!!
Nod looks over to Donna Jean:
"What? Oh-I don't know."
The waitress eyes him warily.
Lou says mechanically: "One water-one coffee-one raspberry ice tea-oh-& I'd like a libido."
Waitress writes-but as she gets to that last bit-confusion is writ on the wrinkles of her moonish face:
"Libido??? We don't have that-sorry."
Lou: "Oh-that's okay. You like my ring?"
She shows the waitress an orange plastic spider ring. The waitress recoils-but then gets it.
Waitress: "Almost got me. But now-we do have water-coffee & that there tea & I'll be getting it for you all."
Lou-still mechanical: "Great-thanks love."
The waitress disappears.
The kids are broke-they are hungry...after a moment they start to look around-like scavengers-scenting out carrion road kill-& the smoking section was perfect-it was empty-the pickings would be okay---only cast off plates of half eaten hamburgers & fries only a little cold. The kids go in hunting-but only end up with those limp fries. They sit solemn at the booth-picking at the cold stale kill.
The waitress appears only fast enough to unload their drinks-tells them that her shift is over & brings in her replacement-much to their relief it is Eddie-the cool guy waiter-he waves from the dust tracks of waitress high tailing it outta there. Eddie is a curly blond peachy keen poet on the sly kinda guy with a red blooded crush on both Donna Jean & Lou---& sometimes much to Eddie's dismay on Nod to. The girls flutter eye/butterfly & yeah Eddie goes off to see if he can get them some freebie-hand outs. Soon enough he returns-their kitchen savior-bearing gifts of nachos & an apple pie-straight out of Twin Peaks-surely. But he had to leave in hurry before his manager caught sight of the theft of food stuff. Donna Jean & Lou wink & wave & he blushes & is gone.
Lou begins to peck at the nachos-a look of perplexed bliss on her face-as if this were her first time eating or tasting nourishment. Donna Jean & Nod stare at her quizzically.
Lou: "Sensation-taste!!!"
Donna Jean: "Yep. That's usually how it goes.
Nod nods sagely at this-as if this were the wisdom of the perfect fortune cookie.
Nod: "I think the Gray Aliens have taken the day away from us."
Lou shakes her head-no: "It's been like this since that asshole bite me at the club. I feel weirdness-I think I'm changing."
Donna Jean looks at Lou-Lou who just wasn't making sense to her right now.
Donna Jean: "Nahhh. I'm with Nod-it's the Aliens. I've been having Hag episodes again---like the dark is a cloud & it's pressing me to the bed-& I can't move...sometimes it whispers."
Nod: " I hate that."
Lou-like she hasn't heard the others:
"It's the Vampires..."
A strange look on her face & a lump of nacho in her mouth-then she remembers to chew.
Lou: "It's like I've never tasted-never eaten-or seen or heard before. Senses & perception-they are more alive now---it's multicolored & multidimensional---it's all so amazing!!!"
She breaks off a small bit of crust smeared with sweet apple coating & pops it into her mouth-her face lights up astonished.
Nod & Donna Jean watch their sister-their friend-they watch confused & yet they hold on & try to deny & ignore the fear in the back of their throat.
