Hey SGI Veggies!
I am currently vegetarian (and have been since I was 11...so, ten years in August). I did veganism for a year and enjoyed it, but really craved dairy products so I went back to vegetarian. But I don't eat any meat or seafood. When I was vegan I got my protein from soy products, such as tofu and soy milk, and also from nuts. I also took a B12 supplement. Soy is still one of my main sources of protein, although I have gone back to dairy products as well for now. I became vegetarian for ethical reasons. When we do gongyo our last prayer is for "peace throughout the world and the happiness of all living beings," and I strongly believe that this includes not just all humans, but all animals as well. Going vegan is great because not only do you oppose killing animals for their meat, but you also actively oppose the mistreatment of animals that is involved in obtaining other products they produce (such as milk, cheese, eggs). Oftentimes, even these processes are harmful and abusive to animals. Anyways, go vegetarians and vegans! And Buddhism!

70% of what I eat is Organic, and Vegggies , Fruit, Bread, Beans. Teas. My goal is 100% but I am not good at it. Perhaps I can learn from the members on this forum. I am an animal lover. I have seen so many horrible videos of the way cats, dogs, cows etc are treated. I just have to stop eating fish, and chicken. I just cant seem to go cold turkey .( sorry about the reference) Anyway the World of Animality. I think most animals are more humanistic than animalistic.

I was meat crazy for most of my life. Steak night with my family happened one-a-week without fail. Vegetarianism was not a quick decision for me. Over the course of seven years, I learned more about it. Casting aside my ignorance, I determined to eat healthier than I ever had. Now, if only sugar was a derivative of meat...

I have been a vegetarian for quite a long time. I started for health reasons. I don't miss meat, etc...... However, I must admit that once a year I like salmon. There is just something about fish, must be the Omega 3. I take vitamine supplements every day. My friends and family know that I don't eat meat and they are quite accommodating. I also try to buy organic fruits and vegetables when I can. I figure the expense is worth it. Who wouldn't want to have less cemicals in their body.

Happy Vegetarian!

I've been a vegetarian for over a year now.

In high school I had a vegetarian boyfriend and a vegan friend, so I didn't eat meat when I was around them, which got me used to eating less meat in general. In college, I arbitrarily decided to be vegetarian. I did it for my semester, but because I was on campus "rations" and hadn't planned it well, it was a miserable experience. I returned home after that first semester and quit vegetarianism for the time being. As I learned more about the meat industry and it's impact on modern life, I gradually became interested in vegetarianism again. When Daniel suggested that we become vegetarian, I was happy to make the transition. While I have occasionally eaten meat since then, it is only when that food would otherwise have been thrown away.

I am vegetarian for social reasons.

Hi Nichiren Buddhist Vegans and all vegans out there,
I want to be a vegan because I don't want animals to be hurt but I have buts about it. I'm an O+ blood type which means I should have red meat to be healthy - so I've read anyway - and I have cravings for it. Not that that's healthy because I also have cravings for things that contain sugar or GM corn syrup which we know is poison. I'm quite limited as to what foods I can have due to allergies that I'm chanting to overcome them. I have celiac disease which means I cannot consume any wheat, barley, rye or oats - No bread, pasta, cake cookies, etc. My mainstay is veggies and either beef or salmon. I also consume dairy which I'm chanting for the determination to stop. I'm allegic to soy, fowl and pork. I want to find a hypnotist close to me who will exchange services with me.
I did come up with a non-dairy soft serve. I first freeze some cleaned organic fruit:
grapes, cut up banana's in a zip lock bag in freezer, pears, mango's, peaches, blueberries, etc. put them in a blender, add almond milk - either chocolate or vanilla (you can get unsweetned and add either stevia or agave) - add raw organic almond butter then blend about 30 seconds and get a spoon. It's full of antioxidants and delicious.
Any ideas of how I can become a healthy vegan let me know.
Thank you so much.
Peace & Happiness,
Laura - Vegan wannabe

Hi there ... my husband and I started on the road of vegetarian about 2 to 3 years ago. Can't say that we are 100%, as we will still have fish from time to time, but we haven't eaten any poultry, pork or beef in all that time. This wasn't a consciencous decision because of our practice but in our attempts to be respectful to other living beings. As you can see we are still working on the fish part. This house is a work in progress. :)
